The New Covenant, prophesied in Jeremiah 31:31-34, says that each one can know God personally, and Jesus Christ Himself defined salvation as knowing the Father (John 17:3). Not knowledge about God, but personal, intimate relationship with Him. So often, we as believers are led to only dwell on what we receive from God and not what we have to give Him. We don’t comprehend what it means that Jesus is Man like us, who has burdens we can help carry, worries we can help comfort, desires we can help fulfill, and a tender heart that we can cherish and protect. One’s faith becomes merely a means whereby a happy afterlife is secured, but that kind of faith misses out on the joys of eternal life that can be experienced in this life. We can know and love our Creator in every aspect of our lives in how we eat and drink, travel and rest, sleep and rise, and play and work.
Just like we change everything about our lives when we marry and have children, so too we should transform our lives as we join in our covenant relationship with the Lord. Not one aspect of our lives should remain untouched by our love. We can truly love Him with all our heart, mind, might, and strength. And we can apply His love to all those around us – even to the home He gave for us with the earth. We can learn to fully keep the Great Commandments and thus fully love God, for if we love Him, we will keep His commandments. And when we do our part of the covenant to join in deep bonds of love with Christ, we are joined to full joys of eternal life (Luke 10:25-28).
At the center of this book is the desire for every person to know God for themselves and to understand what they mean to the Lord to be His friend and not just a follower. Every chapter is written with an eye toward how we can love Jesus better, deeper, and in new ways. We can’t love God generally; we need to love Him in practical, real ways. This is not a theology book, nor does it try to exhaustively explain every doctrine of Christianity. But it does try to reveal the core foundation of how we can effectively live a life that honors and glorifies God.
